Ending Violence Against Women and Girls: Violence Against Women and Girls in South Tarawa Report

This evaluation reviews a decade of Australia’s development assistance to end violence against women and girls (EVAWG), assessing progress since the 2008 landmark report Violence Against Women in Melanesia and East Timor.

Violence against women and girls remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide, with prevalence rates in many Pacific countries and Timor-Leste more than double the global average. Commissioned by the Office of Development Effectiveness (ODE), this evaluation examines the effectiveness, relevance, and reach of Australia’s aid investments in EVAWG across seven countries, including Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

It explores gains made, persistent challenges, and lessons learned in three key areas: increasing access to justice, improving access to quality services, and preventing violence. The report also considers Australia’s global leadership and policy dialogue on EVAWG, offering recommendations to guide aid programming and policy engagement into the next decade.
